Celebrate Public Power in Sun Prairie

Dig In Causes Outage

Late in the afternoon on Monday, June 26, a contractor dug in and hit a feeder distribution line causing interruption of electrical service to 1,100 customers. SPU crews identified and isolated the issue and most all customer's service was restored within about 90 minutes. Thank You SPU Line Crew!

Smart Meters Come To Sun Prairie

Sun Prairie Utilities has initiated an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project to transition electric and water meters throughout the City to be an advanced, two-way meter.

SPU Power Supply to Include WI Largest Solar Energy Center

Sun Prairie Utilities will meet more of its customers’ electricity needs with power harnessed from the sun thanks to a recently announced agreement between Sun Prairie’s not-for-profit power supplier, WPPI Energy, and NextEra Energy Resources.

2017 Power Cost Adjustment

SPU rate payers should see lower relative PCA through the winter, spring, and fall months, but higher relative PCA through the summer season when market pricing is higher. The net effect projected for the 12 months of 2017 is estimated to be a net increase of 1.2%-2.2% in total, due to market energy fluctuations.

Sun Prairie Utilities collected and forwarded $1181 from Lighting Effects Drive to SPCHO Spirit of Giving, and $$426.96 from Bill RoundUp to the Sun Prairie Food Pantry.

Energy Star Appliance Rebate

For a limited time, Sun Prairie Utilities electric customers can purchase a new, currently-qualified EnergyStar refrigerator, dehumidifier, or clothes washing machine and receive a rebate. This offer is available on purchases between June 1 through November 1 or until funds are exhausted.

Electric Rate Increase

Sun Prairie Utilities has filed an application with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) to increase electric rates. A telephonic hearing on the application was held May 31, 2016. The PSC has approved the new rates being effective July 2, 2016.

Smith's Crossing Fiber Optic Pilot

The Fiber Optic Internet test project continues in the Smith's Crossing subdivision. Our in-home installation contractors JCS, Inc., have connected over 125 homes with fiber optic internet as of February 20.

Thank You For Your Donations

Thank You to Sun Prairie Residents who participated in the SPU Bill RoundUp and the SPU Lighting Effects Drive. SPU was able to forward $676 to the Sun Prairie Food Pantry and $770 to the Sun Prairie Community Help Organization in 2015.

Water Rate Increase

Sun Prairie Utilities filed an application on June 16, 2015 with the Public Service Commission (PSC) for authority to increase water rates. The rate increase will go into effect on January 6, 2016. The effect of the increase for an average residential customer using 600 cubic feet would see a monthly increase of $1.77.

Change in Law, Change in Policy

In April 2014 Wisconsin Act 274 was signed into law. Act 274 revised the law applicable to residential tenants’ delinquent utility charges. The revisions primarily appear as amendments or additions to Wis. Stat. § 66.0809 which applies to municipal public utility charges. Sun Prairie Utilities would like to highlight with you a few important changes that will affect the way we here at Sun Prairie Utilities must operate.

Water Rate Increase

Sun Prairie Utilities filed an application on April 23, 2014, with the Public Service Commission (PSC) for authority to increase water rates. The rate increase will go into effect on July 3, 2014. The effect of the increase for an average residential customer using 710 cubic feet would see a monthly increase of $0.51.

SPU Bill RoundUp

Sun Prairie Utilities offers a voluntary donation program where customers can donate a few cents each month to help two specific help organizations. We call this program “RoundUp”. We have identified the Sun Prairie Food Pantry and the American Cancer Society as the two help organizations to receive all RoundUp donations.

Freezing Water Lines

Sun Prairie Utilities is under the belief that the threat of water service lines has passed. The decision to run a water stream at night is up to the property owner and should be based on the location history and risk. Sun Prairie Utilities no longer recommends running a water stream at night as a preventative measure.

Inviting Public Comment

Sun Prairie Utilities is proposing a city-wide fiber optic overlay to City Council. This fiber optic service would allow SPU to offer high speed internet service to all of their customers. This overlay would allow symmetrical bandwidth up to 1-gigabyte which would position the Sun Prairie residents and business community to be highly competitive for technology, medical, and education services.

Contact Utility To Make Arrangements

In Wisconsin, electric utilities may not disconnect service from Nov. 1 to April 15 during the cold winter months. However, utilities may issue final disconnection notices after April 15. Customers may call the SPU Business Office at 837-5500 or visit the utility office at 125 W. Main Street from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to make arrangements.

After 3 years of specialized schooling and logging thousands of apprentice hours, our meter reader of 7 years, Eric Burkhalter, has graduated the Meter Technician Apprenticeship and achieved the title of Meter Technician. Congratulations!

Freezing Temperatures

This is proving to be one of the coldest winter seasons on record and the extreme cold temperatures have been driving the frost line deeper and deeper across the region. Sun Prairie Utilities is alerting the community about the potential of frozen water lines. We have seen 19 frozen laterals as of Mar. 6 and recommend that residents run a stream of water.

New Electric Rates Effective January 6

On November 26 the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (WPSC) held a public hearing regarding an electric rate increase request filed by Sun Prairie Utilities back in March, 2013. On December 5, 2013, the WPSC authorized new rates which will be effective starting January 6, 2014.

Sun Prairie Warming Neighbors!

Over the last few weeks, Sun Prairie Utilities had been soliciting specific warming packages and monetary donations in exchange for a string of LED Holiday Lights. These collections went to the Sun Prairie Community Help Organization (SPCHO). In all , we have distributed to SPCHO $200 in checks and four warming package donations.

E-bill Sign-up Drive Through November 6th

Sun Prairie Utilities has recently implemented an e-bill notification option to its customers. SPU is conducting an e-bill sign-up drive from now until November 6th. All customers who opt to go paperless with Sun Prairie Utilities by November 6th will be entered into a drawing to win one of two $100 bill credits. The drawing will be conducted on November 8, 2013, and winners will be notified.

Sun Prairie’s city leaders are considering a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network for increased utility efficiencies that can also deliver broadband services. If built, the network would be available to all Sun Prairie Utilities customers. SPU Customers Beware Of Bill Scam

Sun Prairie Utilities is receiving telephone inquiries from customers about suspicious phone calls and emails they have received. The solicitor is telling people that they are behind 2 months with their utility bill and that their water and electric services will be disconnected. These calls are not originating from Sun Prairie Utilities.

SPU FIles For Electric Rate Increase

Sun Prairie Utilities has filed an application with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) to increase electric rates. The adjustment has been requested in order to cover inflationary increases in operational and maintenance expenses and costs associated with maintaining the reliability of the electric distribution system. The last electric rate increase was approved in 2007.

June 25 Power Outage

Several thousand customers lost power early morning June 25 when our Bird Street substation had an insulator failure at approximately 5:45 a.m. All customers had their service restored by approximately 6:35 a.m.

NEW Online Portal

Sun Prairie Utilities has updated our online account interface that will require all customers to register a self determined User ID and Password. Previously registered account login information will no longer work to gain online access to your account.

Focus on Energy offers $50 to remove energy-wasting fridge or freezer

The state Focus on Energy program is encouraging Wisconsin residents to turn in their old refrigerators and freezers. Focus opened a disposal facility in Franklin, WI that will disassemble old fridges and freezers and employ 18 people. Focus is offering utility customers a $50 incentive to turn in old appliances, as well as free appliance removal.

Electric heaters short on saving claims

Electric heaters, which have long been a bad deal for most people trying to lower their energy bills, are an even worse deal in Wisconsin this winter because of falling prices for natural gas. But that doesn’t stop manufacturers of electric heaters from using newspaper and Internet ads – some of which feature home-repair guru Bob Vila and pictures of Amish craftsmen – to attract buyers by promising big savings.
